What should technology companies do to prevent AI-powered online abuse?



Technology companies have a critical role to play in preventing and stopping AI-generated digital violence. They should: 

  1. Make pornographic deepfake or "nudify" tools inaccessible to consumers and children. 
  2. Refuse to host images or videos created by these tools. 
  3. Develop clear, easily accessible reporting features for responding to abuse and respond swiftly and effectively when victims report abusive content. 
  4. Implement proactive solutions for identifying falsified content, including auto-checking for algorithmically detectable watermarks. 
  5. Mandate tagging or identification of AI-generated content. 
  6. Recruit more women as researchers and builders of technology and work with women’s organizations in designing AI tech.

From 25 November to 10 December 2025, mark the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-based Violence under the theme: “UNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls”. Violence against women and girls affects one in three women . It is a global human rights emergency that must stop. As the world marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action – one of the most progressive international agreements on women’s rights to date – the UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE 2025 campaign focuses on one of the fastest-growing forms of abuse: digital violence against women and girls.
